Infiltracezone

Infiltracezone is a neologism that appears in a small subset of hydrology and environmental engineering literature to describe a subsurface zone associated with the infiltration of water and other fluids from the surface into the subsurface. It is typically discussed in the context of the unsaturated or vadose zone and the transition toward the groundwater table, where infiltrated fluids move downward and interact with soil, rock, and existing pore water.

Definitions and usage vary. In some sources, the term refers to the actively infiltrating portion of the subsurface media, where hydraulic gradients drive percolation and solute transport. In others, it is used more loosely to denote a region that marks the boundary between surface infiltration processes and deeper groundwater processes. Because the term is not standardized, its precise boundaries and properties can differ between authors and studies.

Status and recommendations. In mainstream hydrology, the closest established terms are infiltration zone, vadose zone, or recharge zone. Infiltracezone is not widely recognized as a formal category, and when used, it should be clearly defined within the work to avoid ambiguity. For formal or interdisciplinary writing, it is generally advisable to prefer conventional terminology unless the author provides a precise definition and context for the term.
