Inertsimõõdikud

Inertsimõõdikud, often translated as inertia sensors or inertial measurement units (IMUs), are devices that measure and report an object's specific force, angular rate, and sometimes magnetic field. These measurements are derived from a combination of accelerometers, gyroscopes, and sometimes magnetometers. Accelerometers detect linear acceleration, which can be used to determine changes in velocity and orientation relative to gravity. Gyroscopes measure angular velocity, indicating the rate of rotation around an axis. Magnetometers, when included, sense the Earth's magnetic field, providing a stable reference for heading.

By processing the data from these individual sensors, an IMU can estimate an object's orientation, velocity, and position. This is achieved through complex algorithms that integrate the sensor readings over time. For example, integrating acceleration data twice yields position information, while integrating angular rate data provides orientation. However, these integrations are prone to drift, meaning errors accumulate over time. Therefore, IMUs often incorporate other sensors, such as GPS or barometric pressure sensors, to correct for drift and improve accuracy.

They are crucial for navigation systems in aircraft, ships, and vehicles, enabling them to determine their position and movement without external references. In robotics, IMUs allow robots to maintain balance, navigate environments, and perform precise movements.
