For instance, when a company's stock is added to or removed from an index, the index's composition changes, and its calculation must be updated to reflect this. This often happens when a company's market capitalization grows or shrinks significantly, or due to mergers and acquisitions. Similarly, stock splits or dividend issuances can lead to adjustments in the index calculation to ensure that the index's value accurately reflects the underlying market performance without distortions. Over time, the composition of goods and services that consumers purchase or producers sell changes.
