Immanuel Kant was a German philosopher widely regarded as a central figure in modern philosophy. Born in Königsberg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia), he spent his entire life in and around his hometown. Kant's philosophical work is characterized by a systematic and comprehensive approach that sought to reconcile rationalism and empiricism.

His most influential works, the critiques, are the Critique of Pure Reason, the Critique of Practical Reason, and the Critique of Judgment. In the Critique of Pure Reason, Kant explored the limits of human reason and argued that our knowledge of the world is shaped by innate mental structures, or categories, that organize sensory experience. He distinguished between phenomena, the world as it appears to us, and noumena, the world as it is in itself, which he claimed is unknowable.

In the Critique of Practical Reason, Kant addressed morality. He proposed the categorical imperative as the supreme principle of morality, suggesting that one should act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law. This principle emphasizes duty and reason as the basis for ethical conduct, independent of consequences or personal desires.

The Critique of Judgment examined aesthetics and teleology, exploring the nature of beauty and the purposefulness of nature. Kant's philosophy had a profound impact on subsequent philosophical movements, including German idealism, phenomenology, and analytic philosophy, and his ideas continue to be debated and studied extensively.
