ImdalDn

ImdalDn is a naming notation used in the fictional Imdal Directory Network (IDN), a distributed directory system intended to manage identities and resources at scale. It provides a compact, human-readable representation of an entry’s position within a hierarchical namespace while carrying essential attribute hints. The notation takes inspiration from traditional distinguished names but is designed for modern, dynamic environments.

Structure and syntax: An ImdalDn string is composed of segments separated by forward slashes. Each segment encodes a label and value in the form label=value, with segments ordered from the root toward the entry. A root segment identifies the top of the namespace, while subsequent segments specify domain, organizational unit, role, and identifier.

Interoperability and usage: ImdalDn aims to be interoperable with existing directory conventions by offering a canonical form and an optional URI representation. It is used by tooling in the Imdal ecosystem for access control decisions, policy evaluation, and identity resolution. Implementations typically include parsers, validators, and encoders that preserve canonical order.

Security and governance: canonicalization, case-insensitivity for labels, and strict validation minimize ambiguity and spoofing risks. Extensions may support multibyte labels, attribute scoping, and link resolution. As a design concept, ImdalDn remains subject to ongoing discussion within the Imdal community and has not been standardized beyond project documentation.
