Ilmanvuototestit, also known as air leakage testing or blower door testing, are procedures used to measure the airtightness of a building. This is typically done by depressurizing or over-pressurizing the building using a fan and measuring the amount of air that leaks in or out through the building envelope. The primary goal is to identify and quantify air leaks, which can significantly impact a building's energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and comfort.

The testing is usually performed by certified professionals using specialized equipment. A large fan is mounted in a doorway, creating a controlled pressure difference between the inside and outside of the building. This pressure difference forces air through any cracks, gaps, or openings in the building's shell. Sensitive pressure gauges and airflow meters are used to precisely measure the volume of air that needs to be moved by the fan to maintain a specific pressure differential.

The results of an ilmanvuototest are often expressed as an air change rate per hour (ACH) at a standard pressure, or as a specific leakage rate. A lower ACH value indicates a more airtight building. High air leakage can lead to increased heating and cooling costs as conditioned air escapes and unconditioned air enters. It can also contribute to drafts, moisture problems, and the infiltration of outdoor pollutants. Identifying and sealing these leaks is a crucial step in improving a building's performance and occupant well-being.
