Ilmanjäähdyttimet, known in English as air coolers, are devices used to lower the temperature of ambient air. They operate on a simple principle involving the evaporation of water. A fan draws warm air from the surroundings, passing it over water-saturated pads or wicks. As the water evaporates, it absorbs heat from the air, thereby cooling it. The cooled, moist air is then circulated back into the room.

Unlike air conditioners, ilmanjäähdyttimet do not use refrigerants or a compressor. This makes them a more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly option. They are also typically less expensive to purchase and operate. However, their cooling effectiveness is dependent on humidity levels. In very humid conditions, the evaporative process is less efficient, and the devices can increase the indoor humidity further.

Ilmanjäähdyttimet are best suited for dry climates where they can provide a noticeable cooling effect. They are commonly used in homes, offices, and workshops. Their portability is another advantage, as many models are lightweight and equipped with wheels, allowing for easy relocation between rooms. Maintenance usually involves refilling the water tank and cleaning the cooling pads to prevent mold and odor buildup. The effectiveness of an ilmanjäähdytin is also influenced by its size and the volume of the space it is intended to cool.
