Ilmaisintyyppejä, or detector types, refers to the various technologies and methods used to sense and signal the presence of a specific phenomenon or condition. These devices are crucial in a wide range of applications, from industrial automation and safety systems to scientific research and consumer electronics. The choice of detector type depends heavily on what is being detected and the environment in which it operates.

One common category is proximity detectors. These can be inductive, sensing metallic objects through electromagnetic fields; capacitive, detecting a broader range of materials by changes in capacitance; or photoelectric, using light beams to identify the presence or absence of an object. Another important group is pressure detectors, which measure the force exerted by a fluid or gas. These can be diaphragm-based, strain gauge, or piezoelectric.

Temperature detectors, such as thermistors, thermocouples, and resistance temperature detectors (RTDs), are essential for monitoring and controlling thermal conditions. They work by varying their electrical properties with changes in temperature. For detecting motion, Doppler radar detectors or passive infrared (PIR) detectors are frequently employed. PIR detectors sense changes in infrared radiation emitted by moving bodies.

In environmental monitoring, gas detectors identify specific airborne substances, while smoke detectors signal the presence of combustion particles. Specialized detectors exist for even more specific needs, such as vibration detectors for machinery diagnostics or image sensors for visual input.
