IgE-mediated refers to a type of allergic reaction that involves immunoglobulin E (IgE), a specific class of antibodies produced by the immune system. This immune response is triggered when the body encounters an allergen, such as pollen, dust mites, certain foods, or insect venom, that it mistakenly identifies as harmful.

Upon initial exposure to an allergen, the immune system produces IgE antibodies specific to that substance. These IgE antibodies then attach themselves to mast cells and basophils, types of white blood cells. In subsequent exposures, the allergen binds to these IgE antibodies, cross-linking them on the surface of the mast cells and basophils. This binding event causes the mast cells and basophils to release potent chemical mediators, including histamine, leukotrienes, and prostaglandins.

These released mediators are responsible for the rapid onset of symptoms characteristic of IgE-mediated allergies. Symptoms can vary widely and affect different parts of the body. Common manifestations include skin reactions like hives (urticaria) and eczema, respiratory symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and difficulty breathing (asthma), and gastrointestinal issues like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, IgE-mediated reactions can lead to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening systemic reaction that can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, airway constriction, and loss of consciousness. Diagnosis often involves skin prick tests or blood tests to detect specific IgE antibodies.
