Icedwelling

Icedwelling refers to the practice of humans living in or utilizing ice as a primary structural element for shelter. This concept is most famously associated with the indigenous peoples of the Arctic regions, particularly the Inuit, who developed igloos as temporary or semi-permanent dwellings. An igloo is constructed from blocks of snow, typically packed and frozen, which are then stacked in a spiral to form a dome. The unique shape and the insulating properties of snow provide protection from extreme cold, wind, and snowstorms.

While igloos are the most well-known example, other forms of ice dwelling or ice utilization for shelter have existed. Some historical accounts suggest the use of ice caves or natural ice formations as temporary refuges in very cold climates. The construction and maintenance of such dwellings require specific knowledge of snow and ice properties, as well as the ability to withstand harsh environmental conditions. The practice is largely a testament to human adaptability and ingenuity in surviving in some of the planet's most challenging environments. Modern habitation in icy regions typically relies on more conventional building materials and technologies, though the historical and cultural significance of icedwelling remains.
