IberoCeltic

Ibero-Celtic is a hypothetical linguistic grouping that proposes a shared origin or close relationship between the Iberian and Celtic languages spoken in antiquity. The theory suggests that a proto-language, predating both Proto-Celtic and the languages of the Iberian Peninsula, existed in this region. Proponents point to certain lexical similarities and some proposed grammatical parallels between Iberian and Celtic languages as evidence for this connection.

However, Ibero-Celtic remains a controversial and largely unsubstantiated hypothesis within linguistics. Many scholars argue that the similarities observed are coincidental or due to later contact and borrowing between the languages rather than a common ancestor. Iberian, in particular, is a poorly understood language, with its classification still debated, and the extent of its relationship with Celtic is not widely accepted. The prevailing view is that while there was undoubtedly contact and influence between Celtic-speaking peoples and those of the Iberian Peninsula, a distinct Ibero-Celtic language family is unlikely. Further research into both Iberian and Celtic languages is needed to definitively resolve this linguistic question.
