IWSLT

The International Workshop on Spoken Language Translation (IWSLT) is an annual conference focused on advancing research in automatic speech recognition (ASR), machine translation (MT), and related technologies for multilingual spoken language processing. Organized by the Language Technology Laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University (LTI@CMU), the workshop brings together researchers, developers, and industry professionals to present and discuss innovations in the field.

IWSLT was first held in 2006 and has since become a key event for evaluating and promoting progress in real-time and offline translation systems, particularly for low-resource languages. The workshop features shared tasks, where participants develop and test their systems on standardized datasets, such as transcriptions of TED Talks, EU Parliament proceedings, or other multilingual speech corpora. These tasks help benchmark performance across different languages and translation scenarios, including direct and cascaded (two-step) translation approaches.

A notable aspect of IWSLT is its emphasis on practical applications, including real-time translation, multilingual speech-to-speech translation, and integration with other NLP technologies.
