IVsüst

IVsüst is a term encountered in some Turkish medical literature to denote intravenous infusion therapy, the process of delivering fluids, medications, or nutrients directly into a vein using an intravenous (IV) line. The term is not widely standardized in international nomenclature and may be used variably across institutions.

Typical components include venous access (a peripheral IV catheter or a central venous catheter), IV fluids in a sterile bag or bottle, tubing, and a control device such as a gravity drip set or an infusion pump. The rate and total volume are determined by the clinical indication, patient weight, and electrolyte status, and may be adjusted in response to monitoring.

Solutions used can be crystalloids (eg, saline or lactated Ringer’s), dextrose-containing solutions, or colloids. Medications can be administered as IV infusions or via IV push, depending on their properties and the prescribed protocol. Parenteral nutrition may be delivered by infusion through a central line in patients unable to meet needs by oral intake.

Safety and monitoring are central to IVsüst. Risks include infection at the insertion site, phlebitis, infiltration or extravasation, air embolism, electrolyte disturbances, and fluid overload. Proper aseptic technique, line maintenance, regular assessment of site and patient, and compatibility checks for infused substances are essential.

Historical notes describe intravenous therapy developing from early solutions to modern infusion systems, with infusion pumps becoming common in the mid-20th century. In current practice, IV infusion remains a cornerstone of acute and chronic care, supported by guidelines from national and international health bodies.
