ITAnschluss refers to the historical event of Germany's annexation of Austria in March 1938. The term is a portmanteau of "Italien" (Italy) and "Anschluss," a German word meaning "connection" or "annexation." While the event itself is widely known as the Anschluss, the specific term "ITAnschluss" highlights the pivotal role Italy played in enabling it.

Prior to 1938, Italy, under Benito Mussolini, had been a key player in diplomatic efforts to prevent German expansionism. However, by the mid-1930s, Mussolini's foreign policy shifted. He began to align himself with Adolf Hitler, particularly after the Stresa Front collapsed and Italy faced international condemnation for its invasion of Ethiopia. This growing alliance created a significant diplomatic shift.

When Hitler demanded the integration of Austria into Nazi Germany, he anticipated opposition from the Western powers, but also crucially, from Italy. Mussolini, however, gave Hitler his tacit approval, effectively removing a major obstacle to the annexation. This Italian support was crucial for Hitler, as it significantly reduced the likelihood of a coordinated international response against the Anschluss.

The ITAnschluss, therefore, underscores how Mussolini's acquiescence, driven by his own geopolitical calculations and increasing dependence on Nazi Germany, paved the way for Hitler's ambitions to be realized without significant international diplomatic resistance from a potentially powerful quarter.
