ISBNtunnisteet
ISBNtunnisteet, or International Standard Book Numbers, are unique numerical identifiers for books. Originally a 10-digit system, it was updated to a 13-digit format in 2007 to accommodate the growing number of publications. Each ISBN is composed of five parts separated by hyphens: a prefix element (currently 978 or 979), a registration group element indicating the country or language region, a registrant element identifying the publisher, a publication element identifying the specific edition, and a final check digit. This check digit is calculated using a specific algorithm to ensure the validity of the entire number. ISBNs are crucial for booksellers, publishers, libraries, and distributors for efficient inventory management, ordering, and tracking. They allow for precise identification of a particular book, edition, and format, distinguishing it from other publications. The International ISBN Agency is responsible for overseeing the system globally, with national agencies managing ISBN allocation within their respective territories.
