IPSchutzart

IPSchutzart, also known as Ingress Protection rating, is a standard used to classify and identify the degree of protection provided by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures against intrusion from foreign bodies and moisture. It is defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in its standard IEC 60529. The rating consists of two digits, each signifying a specific type of protection.

The first digit indicates the level of protection against solid objects. This ranges from 0, offering no protection, to 6, providing complete protection against dust ingress. For example, an IP2X rating means the enclosure is protected against solid objects larger than 12.5 millimeters.

The second digit indicates the level of protection against water. This ranges from 0, offering no protection, to 9K, providing protection against high-pressure, high-temperature water jets. An IPX4 rating, for instance, signifies that the enclosure is protected against splashing water from any direction.

When combined, the two digits provide a comprehensive understanding of an enclosure's resilience. For example, an IP67 rating means the enclosure is dust-tight (6) and protected against immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes (7). Understanding the IPSchutzart is crucial for selecting appropriate equipment for specific environmental conditions, ensuring safety and longevity of electrical and mechanical devices.
