IMDG Code is the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code. It is a mandatory code established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to help standardize the transport of dangerous goods by sea. The IMDG Code contains detailed recommendations on packaging, labeling, stowage, and segregation of dangerous goods. It also includes information on emergency response procedures and accident reporting. The primary goal of the IMDG Code is to ensure the safety of the maritime transport of dangerous goods, protecting both people and the environment.

The IMDG Code is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 contains the general provisions, definitions, and classification of dangerous goods, as well as detailed requirements for packaging and labeling. Volume 2 provides the alphabetically arranged list of dangerous goods, including their UN numbers, proper shipping names, hazard classes, packing groups, and specific provisions. It also covers segregation requirements for different classes of dangerous goods when stowed on board vessels.

Compliance with the IMDG Code is required by the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). It is a comprehensive and dynamic set of regulations that is regularly updated to reflect changes in technology, practices, and the understanding of the risks associated with transporting dangerous goods. Shippers, carriers, and others involved in the maritime transport of dangerous goods must ensure they are familiar with and adhere to the current provisions of the IMDG Code.
