IL1F6

IL1F6, also known as IL36γ (Interleukin-36 gamma), is a member of the IL-1 cytokine family. This family of proteins plays a crucial role in regulating immune responses and inflammation. IL1F6 is specifically a pro-inflammatory cytokine, meaning it tends to promote inflammation. It is expressed by various cells, including keratinocytes in the skin and epithelial cells in other tissues.

The primary function of IL1F6 is to activate immune cells and amplify inflammatory signals. It achieves this by binding to a specific receptor, IL36R, which is present on the surface of certain immune cells, such as T cells and dendritic cells. For instance, mutations in the IL36RN gene, which encodes the natural antagonist IL-36Ra, can lead to increased IL1F6 activity and the development of conditions like generalized pustular psoriasis.
