IFDs

IFDs is an acronym with multiple meanings across domains. The most widely used technical meaning is in digital imaging, where IFD stands for Image File Directory.

In a TIFF file, an IFD is a data structure that contains one or more entries (tags) describing image properties. Each entry includes a tag identifier, a data type, a count, and a value or offset to the value. Common tags include ImageWidth, ImageLength, BitsPerSample, Compression, and PhotometricInterpretation. An IFD also provides an offset to the next IFD, enabling multi-image files. Software uses IFDs to read metadata and locate image data.

Other uses exist; for example, in some financial and organizational contexts IFD is used as shorthand for independent financial distributors or similar entities. Because the meaning depends on context, it is advisable to confirm the intended meaning.
