The IECEx Scheme is a global system for certification of equipment and services for use in explosive atmospheres. The scheme is based on the IEC's International Standards for equipment used in potentially explosive environments, such as those found in mining, oil and gas, and chemical industries.

The IECEx Scheme operates through a framework of operational documents and procedures that ensure consistency and quality in certification. Key components include the IECEx Certified Equipment Scheme (IECEx Ex ES), the IECEx Certified Persons Scheme (IECEx CP), and the IECEx Conformity Test Report (CTR) System. The Ex ES covers the assessment and certification of electrical and non-electrical equipment designed for hazardous areas. The CP focuses on the competence of individuals who perform tasks in explosive atmospheres. The CTR system allows for the acceptance of test reports from accredited testing laboratories.

Participation in the IECEx Scheme involves manufacturers, testing laboratories, certification bodies, and regulatory authorities from various countries. A manufacturer can obtain an IECEx Certificate of Conformity (CoC) which is recognized by participating member bodies. This certificate signifies that the equipment has been tested and found to comply with the relevant IEC standards for explosive atmospheres. The scheme aims to provide a reliable and internationally harmonized approach to safety in hazardous locations.
