IDNmuuntausta

IDNmuuntausta refers to the process of converting Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) into Punycode and vice-versa. IDNs are domain names that contain characters from non-Latin scripts, such as Arabic, Chinese, or Cyrillic. These characters are not universally supported by all DNS systems. Punycode is an encoding system that translates these IDN characters into a compatible ASCII representation, allowing them to be used within the existing domain name system infrastructure.

The conversion from IDN to Punycode is necessary because the DNS protocol traditionally only supports ASCII characters. When a user enters an IDN into their browser, the browser or the Domain Name System (DNS) resolver performs the IDNmuuntausta to convert it into its Punycode equivalent. This Punycode string is then sent to the DNS servers for resolution. The Punycode representation always begins with the prefix "xn--".

Conversely, when a Punycode domain name is resolved and returned by a DNS server, the reverse process, often also referred to as IDNmuuntausta, converts the Punycode back into its original IDN form. This allows users to see and interact with domain names in their native script, enhancing usability and accessibility for a global audience. This two-way conversion is crucial for the functioning of IDNs on the internet.
