IDNmerkintöinä refers to the representation of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) using Punycode. When a domain name contains characters not found in the basic ASCII set, such as umlauts or Cyrillic letters, it cannot be directly processed by the standard Domain Name System (DNS). IDNmerkintöinä is the system that converts these non-ASCII characters into a compatible ASCII string that the DNS can understand and route.

The process involves encoding the original Unicode characters into a Punycode representation. This Punycode string always begins with the prefix "xn--". For example, a domain name like "bücher.de" would be represented as "xn--bcher-kva.de". The Punycode system ensures that even with international characters, domain names remain compatible with the existing DNS infrastructure. This allows users worldwide to register and use domain names in their native languages, enhancing the accessibility and usability of the internet globally. The conversion between the original IDN and its Punycode equivalent happens transparently to the end-user, typically within the browser or domain name registrar's software.
