Hürriyet

Hürriyet is a Turkish daily newspaper published in Istanbul. Founded in 1948 by Sedat Simavi, it has long been one of Turkey’s leading mass-circulation newspapers, covering national and international news, politics, business, sports, and culture. The name Hürriyet means Liberty in Turkish.

Historically, Hürriyet helped shape Turkish public discourse and has played a central role in the country’s press. It expanded from print into online media in the digital era and has operated under various media groups as the Turkish press landscape consolidated in recent decades.

Originally part of the Doğan Media Group for several decades, Hürriyet was acquired by Demirören Holding in 2018 as part of the sale of Doğan’s media assets. The newspaper publishes in Turkish and maintains an online edition at hurriyet.com.tr. It has also published an English-language edition, Hürriyet Daily News, for international readers.

Today Hürriyet remains a major newspaper in Turkey, adapting to changing media consumption while continuing to report on politics, economics, culture, and daily life. Its reach and influence have been affected by broader shifts in Turkish media and press freedom debates.
