Hõbebromiid

Hõbebromiid is a chemical compound with the formula AgBr. It is a light-sensitive salt of silver and bromine. In its pure form, silver bromide is a pale yellow or white crystalline solid. It is insoluble in water but soluble in solutions of sodium thiosulfate and potassium cyanide. A key characteristic of silver bromide is its high photosensitivity, meaning it reacts significantly when exposed to light. This property makes it a fundamental component in traditional black-and-white photography.

When light strikes silver bromide crystals, a chemical reaction occurs, causing a subtle change within the crystal lattice. This latent image, invisible to the naked eye, is then developed using chemical agents to produce a visible photographic image. Silver bromide is typically used in photographic emulsions, which are suspensions of silver halide crystals, like silver bromide, in gelatin. The size and distribution of these crystals influence the speed and graininess of the photographic material. Beyond photography, silver bromide has found limited applications in other areas, such as in the production of certain specialized light-sensitive materials and in some older types of X-ray detectors.
