Härtegraden refers to the measurement of hardness, which is a material property that describes a substance's resistance to plastic deformation, scratching, or indentation. Different scales exist to quantify this property, each suited for different types of materials and applications. Commonly encountered scales include the Mohs scale, primarily used for minerals, which ranks materials based on their ability to scratch one another. A material with a higher Mohs hardness can scratch a material with a lower Mohs hardness.

For metals and other engineering materials, scales like the Rockwell, Brinell, and Vickers hardness tests are widely employed. The Rockwell hardness test measures the depth of penetration of an indenter under a specific load. The Brinell test uses a hardened steel or carbide ball as an indenter and measures the diameter of the impression left after a load is applied. The Vickers hardness test utilizes a diamond pyramid indenter and is suitable for a wide range of materials, including very hard ones.
