Hygroskopic
Hygroscopic is a term used to describe a substance that readily absorbs moisture from the surrounding air. This absorption can lead to a noticeable change in the physical state of the material, such as becoming sticky, dissolving, or forming a liquid solution. The degree of hygroscopicity varies greatly between different substances. Some materials, like concentrated sulfuric acid or calcium chloride, are highly hygroscopic and can even be used as desiccants to dry out air or other substances. Others, like table salt, exhibit moderate hygroscopicity and can become clumpy in humid conditions.
The process of moisture absorption is driven by the substance's affinity for water molecules. This affinity
