Hydrogensaturated is a term that describes a molecule or compound that has reached its maximum capacity for hydrogen atoms. This saturation typically occurs in organic chemistry, particularly when discussing hydrocarbons. In a saturated hydrocarbon, all available carbon valencies are filled with hydrogen atoms, and there are no carbon-carbon double or triple bonds. This means that the molecule cannot undergo addition reactions with hydrogen. Alkanes are the prime example of hydrogensaturated hydrocarbons, characterized by single bonds between carbon atoms. The term implies a state of stability where no further hydrogen can be added without breaking existing bonds. Conversely, unsaturated compounds, such as alkenes and alkynes, contain double or triple bonds and can undergo hydrogenation, which is the process of adding hydrogen.
