Hydridedehydratatie

Hydridedehydratatie refers to the chemical process of removing the water of crystallization from a hydrated compound, yielding a less hydrated or anhydrous form. This effect is common for salts and minerals that incorporate water molecules into their crystal structure. The dehydration can be achieved by heating, applying reduced pressure, or exposing the substance to a dry gas, and it often occurs in steps, producing intermediate hydrates.

The mechanism depends on the nature of the water in the solid. Some water is lattice water held by hydrogen bonds within the crystal, while other water is coordinated to metal centers. Dehydration thus depends on lattice energy, hydrogen bonding, and the strength of metal–water interactions. Equilibrium is governed by temperature and the partial pressure of water vapor; lowering the ambient humidity or reducing pressure favors dehydration. In many cases, dehydration is reversible: exposing the anhydrous or partially hydrated solid to moisture can lead to rehydration.

Common examples include copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate, CuSO4·5H2O, which loses water around 100 C to form pale blue anhydrous CuSO4; calcium sulfate dihydrate, CaSO4·2H2O, dehydrates in steps to form the hemihydrate CaSO4·0.5H2O and then anhydrous CaSO4 under higher temperatures. Hydrates often reabsorb water from the air, a property exploited in desiccants such as silica gel and in drying organic solvents or gases.
