Hydraatioreaktio, often translated as hydration reaction, refers to a chemical reaction where water molecules are added to a substance. This process is fundamental in chemistry and biology. In inorganic chemistry, hydration reactions are common when ionic compounds dissolve in water. The water molecules surround the ions, stabilizing them and facilitating their dissolution. For example, when sodium chloride dissolves in water, the polar water molecules orient themselves with their partial positive hydrogen atoms towards the negative chloride ions and their partial negative oxygen atoms towards the positive sodium ions, a process known as solvation.

In organic chemistry, hydration reactions typically involve the addition of water across a double or triple bond. Alkenes and alkynes, unsaturated hydrocarbons, readily undergo hydration reactions, often in the presence of an acid catalyst. This reaction converts the unsaturated compound into a saturated one, such as an alcohol. For instance, the hydration of ethene yields ethanol. This process is crucial in the industrial production of many alcohols and other organic compounds.

Hydration is also a vital biological process. In living organisms, water is essential for numerous biochemical reactions, including many that involve hydration. Enzymes often catalyze hydration reactions within cells, playing key roles in metabolism and energy production. Dehydration, the reverse of hydration, is the removal of water molecules and is equally important in biological systems.
