Huvudverb

Huvudverb is a term in Swedish grammar referring to the lexical verb that carries the main semantic content of a clause. A huvudverb denotes an action, a process, or a state and is subject to tense, person, and number conjugation. In many sentences the huvudverb alone marks finiteness, while in others it appears with auxiliary elements to form complex tenses and aspects.

In a clause with auxiliary verbs (hjälpverb), the huvudverb typically appears in a non-finite form. The auxiliary verb provides tense, mood, or voice, while the main verb supplies the core meaning. Common hulpverb combinations include har/hade or kan/skall, which accompany the main verb in forms like har gått or kan läsa. The non-finite form used with auxiliary verbs is often the supine or past participle of the huvudverb, for example gått or läst in perfect constructions.

The contrast between huvudverb and hjälpverb is central in Swedish syntax. Huvudverb can stand alone in simple present or past (jag går, jag gjorde), whereas lists with hjälpverb rely on the auxiliary to express completed actions, ongoing states, or modality (jag har gått, jag kan läsa). Some verbs also function as both main verbs and auxiliary (modals like kan, måste) or participate in periphrastic constructions that convey future or conditional meaning through a combination of huvudverb and hjälpverb.

- Jag har gått till jobbet. (har som hjälpverb; gått är huvudverb i perfekt)
