Hushållsspillvatten

Hushållsspillvatten, also known as domestic wastewater or sewage, is the wastewater generated from household activities. This includes water from sinks, toilets, showers, washing machines, and dishwashers. It contains a variety of contaminants, such as human waste, food scraps, soap, detergents, and other household chemicals. The composition and volume of household wastewater vary depending on the number of people in a household, their habits, and the types of appliances used.

Proper management of household wastewater is crucial for public health and environmental protection. Untreated wastewater can contaminate drinking water sources, spread diseases, and harm aquatic ecosystems. In most developed areas, household wastewater is collected through a network of sewer pipes and transported to a wastewater treatment plant.

Wastewater treatment plants employ various physical, biological, and chemical processes to remove pollutants from the water. These processes typically involve preliminary treatment to remove large debris, primary treatment to settle solids, secondary treatment to break down organic matter using microorganisms, and sometimes tertiary treatment for further purification. The treated water, known as effluent, is then discharged into receiving waters, such as rivers or oceans, under strict environmental regulations. In some cases, treated wastewater can be reused for non-potable purposes like irrigation.
