Hurwitzreaaleja is a term found in some Finnish mathematical literature describing a class of real numbers connected to Hurwitz’s theorem on Diophantine approximation. The name honors Adolf Hurwitz and his result on how well irrational real numbers can be approximated by rationals.

Definition and idea

A real number α is called Hurwitzreaal if there exists a constant c ≥ √5 such that the inequality |α − p/q| < 1/(c q^2) has infinitely many solutions in integers p and q with q > 0. When c = √5, Hurwitz’s theorem guarantees infinitely many such approximations for every irrational α. For larger values of c, the condition becomes stricter, and only a subset of irrational numbers satisfies it. Thus, the Hurwitzreaaleja concept creates a nested hierarchy of sets as c increases.
