Huamanga

Huamanga is the historical and common name for the city of Ayacucho, located in the Andes of Peru. Situated in the Huamanga province, it lies at an elevation of approximately 2,750 meters (9,020 feet) above sea level. The city is the capital of the Ayacucho Region and serves as a significant cultural and administrative center for the area.

The name "Huamanga" has pre-Hispanic origins, believed to stem from Quechua words. The city was founded by the Spanish in 1539 and played a crucial role during the colonial period due to its strategic location. It became known for its religious architecture, with numerous churches and convents built during the Viceroyalty, many of which are still standing and are considered important historical monuments.

Huamanga is historically significant as the site of the Battle of Ayacucho in 1824, a decisive victory for the independence forces led by Antonio José de Sucre against the Spanish royalists.
