Hovedstedet

Hovedstedet is a Norwegian term meaning "the main place" or "the primary seat" of an organization, institution, or government. It is formed from hoved meaning "main" and sted meaning "place" and denotes the central location where an organization conducts its core activities or houses its administration. In practice, hovedstedet is used to refer to the main office or headquarters of a body, as in the sentence that a company’s hovedsted lies in Oslo or that a municipality’s hovedsted is a particular town. The phrase emphasizes centrality and function, and in many contexts more precise terms such as hovedsete or hovedkontor might be preferred for corporate bodies.

In comparison, hovedstad is the standard term for the capital city of a country or region, while hovedsæde or hovedkontor designate the official headquarters of an organization or company. Hovedstedet can also appear in municipal contexts to denote the administrative center of a kommune, typically the location where the municipal council sits.
