Horizontet

Horizontet is the Danish term that denotes the horizon—the apparent boundary where the sky seems to meet the Earth's surface from a given vantage point. In everyday Danish usage, horizontet refers to this line of sight, and its form reflects the neuter definite article.

In physics and geometry, the horizon is described as the boundary produced by the intersection of the observer’s horizontal plane with the Earth's surface. For a spherical Earth, the geometric horizon distance from an eye height h above the surface is approximately sqrt(2Rh), where R is the Earth's radius (about 6,371 kilometers). This relation leads to practical approximations such as a distance to the horizon that grows with the square root of height. Atmospheric refraction bends light as it travels through the atmosphere, so the apparent or visual horizon is usually slightly farther away than the geometric horizon.

There are variants of the horizon, including the sea horizon, land horizon, and the general apparent horizon visible to the observer. In surveying and navigation, the horizon serves as a reference line for measuring altitude and for celestial navigation; instruments like sextants align with the horizon to determine angles to celestial bodies.
