Hoofstruktuur

Hoofstruktuur refers to the anatomical arrangement and composition of a hoof, the protective outer covering of the foot in ungulate mammals. This complex structure is vital for locomotion, weight bearing, and shock absorption. The hoof is primarily composed of keratin, a tough, fibrous protein also found in hair and nails.

The main components of the hoof include the hoof wall, the sole, and the frog. The hoof wall is the visible, hard outer shell that encases the sensitive inner structures. It grows continuously from the coronary band, located at the top of the hoof. The sole is the bottom surface of the hoof, which contacts the ground, providing support and protection to the underlying sensitive tissues. The frog is a triangular, elastic structure located in the central and posterior part of the sole. It acts as a natural shock absorber and plays a role in blood circulation within the foot.

Internally, the hoof contains sensitive laminae, which interdigitate with insensitive laminae of the hoof wall, providing a strong bond and distributing forces evenly. Blood vessels and nerves are also present within the sensitive structures, allowing for sensation and nourishment.
