Homopolümeeriga is a substance formed from a single type of repeating monomer unit. These polymers are characterized by having a uniform chemical structure throughout their backbone, composed exclusively of identical small molecules linked together. The properties of a homopolymer are directly related to the chemical nature of its constituent monomer. For instance, polyethylene, a common homopolymer, is formed solely from ethylene monomers and its properties vary depending on how these monomers are linked (e.g., linear low-density polyethylene versus branched high-density polyethylene).

The synthesis of homopolymers typically involves polymerization reactions where many monomer molecules add to one another in a chain-like fashion. Common polymerization methods include addition polymerization and condensation polymerization. The resulting homopolymer will have a repeating unit that is structurally identical to the monomer, possibly with the loss of a small molecule like water in condensation reactions. Examples of well-known homopolymers include polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polypropylene, each derived from their respective monomers: styrene, vinyl chloride, and propylene. The study and application of homopolymers are fundamental to polymer science and material engineering, forming the basis for many everyday plastics and materials.
