Homeomorfism

Homeomorphism is a concept in topology that describes a continuous deformation between two topological spaces. Informally, two spaces are homeomorphic if one can be stretched, bent, or molded into the other without tearing or gluing. This means that they are topologically equivalent, possessing the same fundamental topological properties.

A homeomorphism is a function f from a topological space X to a topological space Y that satisfies three conditions. First, f must be bijective, meaning it is one-to-one and onto. Second, f must be continuous, so that "close" points in X map to "close" points in Y. Third, the inverse function of f, denoted f⁻¹, must also be continuous. This last condition ensures that the deformation can be reversed, preserving the topological structure in both directions.

If a homeomorphism exists between two spaces, they are said to be homeomorphic. Homeomorphic spaces share all topological invariants, such as the number of connected components, the number of holes, and the fundamental group. For example, a coffee mug and a donut (torus) are considered homeomorphic because one can be continuously deformed into the other. However, a sphere and a torus are not homeomorphic because a sphere has no holes, while a torus has one. The concept of homeomorphism is fundamental to understanding the classification and properties of topological spaces.
