Holonyak
Holonyak is a surname most notably associated with Nick Holonyak Jr., an American electrical engineer and educator who made foundational contributions to solid-state lighting and optoelectronics. In 1962, while at General Electric, Holonyak and his team demonstrated the first practical visible-light LED, a red-emitting diode based on gallium arsenide phosphide (GaAsP). This landmark achievement provided a reliable solid-state source of visible light and helped launch the modern LED industry.
Holonyak spent a large portion of his career at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he
His research has encompassed LEDs, laser diodes, and related semiconductor devices, with emphasis on materials science
Impact and legacy of Holonyak’s contributions are evident in the widespread use of LEDs in lighting, displays,
