Hoblíky

Hoblíky are hand tools used for shaping wood by removing thin shavings. They typically consist of a blade (called a "železo") set in a body, usually made of wood or metal. The user pushes the hoblík along the wood surface, and the angled blade shaves off material.

The depth of the cut is adjusted by controlling the position of the blade relative to the sole of the hoblík. Different types of hoblíky exist for various tasks. A "hladký hoblík" is used for general smoothing and reducing the thickness of wood. A "kýblík" or "hoblík s drážkou" is designed for creating grooves or rebates. Specialized hoblíky like "rádiusový hoblík" are used for shaping curved surfaces.

The effectiveness of a hoblík depends on the sharpness of its blade and the flatness of its sole. Historically, hoblíky were essential woodworking tools. While power planers have become common, hand hoblíky remain valued by woodworkers for their precision, control, and the tactile experience they offer. They are still used for fine finishing, detail work, and in situations where power tools are impractical or undesirable. The word "hoblík" is derived from the verb "hoblovat," meaning to plane.
