Hlothhere

Hlothhere was a king of Kent who reigned in the late 7th century. He was the son of King Eormenred and grandson of King Eadbald of Kent. Hlothhere's early life is not well-documented, but he became king around 673 CE, succeeding his uncle Ecgberht I.

His reign is primarily known through the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and charters. Hlothhere co-ruled with his nephew, Suæfhere, for a period. This arrangement was likely due to the king's advanced age or a desire to ensure a smooth succession. Later in his reign, Hlothhere seems to have ruled alone.

A significant event during Hlothhere's kingship was a war against Sussex. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle states that Hlothhere fought against Æscwine of Sussex in 677. The exact reasons for this conflict are not clear, but it highlights the volatile political landscape of Anglo-Saxon England.

Hlothhere died in 685 CE. His successor was his nephew, Suæfhere, who had previously co-ruled with him. The lineage of Kentish royalty continued through this period, though the kingdom itself would later face significant pressure from Wessex. Hlothhere's reign is a small but important piece in the history of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms.
