Hljóðbylgja
Hljóðbylgja is the Icelandic word for sound wave. A sound wave is a vibration that propagates as an acoustic wave, through a transmission medium such as a gas, liquid, or solid. In hljóðbylgja, the disturbance is a compression and rarefaction of the medium. When an object vibrates, it causes the surrounding air molecules to vibrate as well. These vibrations are then passed from molecule to molecule, creating a wave that travels through the air.
The speed of a hljóðbylgja depends on the medium through which it is traveling. Sound travels fastest
Hljóðbylgjur can be reflected, refracted, and diffracted. Reflection occurs when a hljóðbylgja bounces off a surface.
