Hjärnskalet

Hjärnskalet is a term of Swedish origin that translates to "skull" or literally "brain shell". It refers to the protective bony structure that encases the brain in vertebrates. This cranial vault is composed of several fused bones that form a rigid case, safeguarding the delicate neural tissues within from injury.

The skull's primary function is protection. It shields the brain from external forces such as impacts and blows, preventing severe damage. Beyond protection, the skull also provides structural support for the face and serves as an attachment point for muscles used in chewing and facial expressions. It houses important sensory organs like the eyes, ears, and nose within its various openings and cavities.

The development of the skull is a complex process that begins during embryonic stages and continues through adolescence. In infants, the skull bones are not fully fused, allowing for some flexibility to facilitate passage through the birth canal and accommodate rapid brain growth. These unfused areas, known as fontanelles, eventually close as the bones ossify and meld together. The specific number and arrangement of cranial bones can vary slightly among different species, but the fundamental role of protecting the brain remains consistent.
