Hiukkasvääriä

Hiukkasvääriä refers to particles that exhibit properties of both waves and particles. This concept is a cornerstone of quantum mechanics, a fundamental theory in physics that describes nature at the smallest scales of energy and matter. Historically, the understanding of light was primarily as a wave, explaining phenomena like diffraction and interference. However, experiments such as the photoelectric effect demonstrated that light also behaves as discrete packets of energy called photons, acting like particles.

Conversely, particles traditionally considered to be solid objects, like electrons, also display wave-like behavior. This was famously proposed by Louis de Broglie, who hypothesized that all matter possesses wave properties. The wavelength associated with a particle is inversely proportional to its momentum, a relationship known as the de Broglie wavelength. The wave-particle duality means that depending on the experiment or observation, a hiukkasvääri will manifest either its wave characteristics or its particle characteristics, but not both simultaneously. This dual nature is not intuitive from our everyday macroscopic experience, where objects are clearly either waves or particles, but it is a well-established experimental fact at the quantum level.
