Hitsaussuojakypärät, known in English as welding helmets, are essential personal protective equipment for individuals performing welding operations. Their primary function is to shield the welder's face, eyes, and neck from the intense ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation produced by the welding arc, as well as from sparks, molten metal, and heat.

The most critical component of a welding helmet is the lens, often referred to as the auto-darkening filter (ADF) or shade lens. Traditional helmets use a passive shade lens, which is permanently darkened to a specific shade number, typically ranging from 9 to 13. Auto-darkening helmets, which have become increasingly common, feature an ADF that automatically darkens to a selected shade when welding is initiated and returns to a clear state when the arc is extinguished. This transition is facilitated by light sensors that detect the arc's brightness.

Welding helmets are constructed from durable, flame-resistant materials, such as polycarbonate or fiberglass, to withstand the harsh welding environment. They are designed to be lightweight and adjustable, allowing for a comfortable and secure fit. Features like adjustable headbands, padded sweatbands, and sufficient ventilation contribute to the welder's comfort during prolonged use. Proper fit is crucial to ensure that the helmet effectively protects the face and neck from all angles. Regular inspection of the helmet and its components, particularly the lens and shell, is recommended to ensure continued safety and effectiveness.
