Histonkerne

Histonkerne is a term that refers to the core structure around which DNA is wrapped in eukaryotic cells. This fundamental unit is crucial for the organization and packaging of the vast amount of genetic material within the nucleus.

The histonkerne is composed of eight histone proteins, specifically two copies each of H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. These histone proteins are rich in positively charged amino acids, which allow them to bind tightly to the negatively charged phosphate backbone of DNA. This interaction forms a compact nucleoprotein complex.

DNA wraps around the histonkerne approximately 1.65 times, creating a structure known as a nucleosome. This nucleosome is the basic repeating unit of chromatin, the material that makes up chromosomes. The wrapping of DNA around histones significantly reduces the length of the DNA molecule, enabling it to fit within the confines of the cell nucleus.
