Himarë

Himarë, also known as Chimara or Chimari in Greek, is a coastal town and municipality in Vlorë County, southern Albania. It lies on the Ionian Sea along the Albanian Riviera, near the border with Greece, and serves as the administrative center of the Municipality of Himarë.

Geography and settlements: The municipality extends along the coast and into the hinterland, including several coastal villages such as Dhërmi, Vuno, Palasë, Qeparo and Lukovë. The area is known for its beaches, clear waters and rugged scenery, including rocky coves and olive groves. The Porto Palermo fortress, a 18th-century fortress built by Ali Pasha, lies on the southern coast near the town.

History and demographics: The region forms part of the historic ethnocultural area of Chameria. It has long-standing Greek cultural ties, and the Greek language is spoken in parts of the population alongside Albanian. Since the fall of communism, minority rights for Greeks are acknowledged under Albanian law, with education and cultural activities in minority languages taking place in some communities.

Economy and culture: Tourism is the leading economic activity, with beach tourism drawing visitors in the summer; fishing and agriculture also contribute. The town hosts traditional festivals, and Orthodox and Catholic churches reflect its mixed heritage.
