Hiippakatalyyttiä

Hiippakatalyyttiä, known in English as enzyme catalysis or biocatalysis, refers to the acceleration of chemical reactions by biological catalysts called enzymes. Enzymes are typically proteins, though some RNA molecules (ribozymes) also exhibit catalytic activity. They are highly specific, meaning each enzyme usually catalyzes only one or a very limited range of reactions. This specificity is due to the unique three-dimensional structure of the enzyme, particularly its active site, which binds to a specific substrate or substrates.

The mechanism of enzyme catalysis involves lowering the activation energy of a reaction. Enzymes achieve this by stabilizing the transition state of the reaction, providing an alternative reaction pathway that requires less energy. This process often involves binding of the substrate(s) to the active site, forming an enzyme-substrate complex. Within this complex, the enzyme facilitates the chemical transformation of the substrate into product(s). Once the reaction is complete, the product(s) are released from the active site, and the enzyme is regenerated, ready to catalyze another reaction cycle.

Enzyme catalysis plays a crucial role in virtually all biological processes, from metabolism and DNA replication to muscle contraction and nerve signal transmission. In industrial applications, biocatalysis is increasingly used in various fields, including pharmaceuticals, food production, and biofuel synthesis, due to its efficiency, specificity, and environmentally friendly nature compared to traditional chemical catalysts. These industrial enzymes can be used in their purified form or as whole cells, and their activity can be influenced by factors such as temperature, pH, and substrate concentration.
