Heterozygosity refers to a genetic state in a diploid organism where a particular gene has two different alleles. An allele is a variant form of a gene. For example, a gene that determines eye color might have an allele for blue eyes and an allele for brown eyes. If an individual inherits one allele for blue eyes and one allele for brown eyes, they are heterozygous for that gene. In contrast, if they inherit two identical alleles, such as two for blue eyes or two for brown eyes, they are homozygous for that gene.
