Heterotrooppiseen

Heterotrooppiseen is a Finnish term that translates to "heterotrophic" in English. In biology, an organism is described as heterotrophic if it cannot produce its own food and must obtain nourishment from organic substances. This means heterotrophs rely on other organisms, either living or dead, for their energy and carbon requirements.

Heterotrophic organisms encompass a vast array of life forms, including all animals, fungi, and many bacteria and protists. They are essential components of ecosystems, as they play crucial roles in nutrient cycling and food webs. For instance, herbivores consume plants, carnivores consume other animals, and decomposers break down dead organic matter, returning nutrients to the environment.
